WV Protocol for Responding to Victims of Sexual Assault

In WV, all victims of sexual assault need to have access to a hospital with qualified trained healthcare providers who can conduct medical forensic exams and provide crisis intervention for adult, adolescent and pediatric individuals reporting sexual assault.

WV Protocol - Medical Response to Sexual Assault

The WV Sexual Assault Protocol for Responding to Victims of Sexual Assault was developed by the WV Foundation for Rape Information and Services to support and ensure a compassionate and comprehensive medical response for victims of sexual assault. It takes into account the needs of victims and the significant health consequences associated with sexual violence.

WV Protocol - Medical Response for Pediatric/Adolescent Vicitms of Sexual Assault

The medical evaluation of a child sexual abuse victim refers to an examination of a child who has disclosed or is suspected of being sexually abused. This kind of medical evaluation, meant to protect children and hold perpetrators accountable, requires a specialized training and skill set. Child victims have different developmental, psychological, and health needs compared to adults, and require age-appropriate accommodations. This is why it is imperative for a child disclosing sexual abuse or suspected of being sexually abused to be seen by a qualified health care provider who meets national training standards in the evaluation and treatment of child abuse. This ensures that the child will be provided holistic, trauma-sensitive, and appropriate care.

WV Protocol - Advocacy Response

Rape crisis centers in WV support individuals reporting sexual assault by providing free confidential services that include crisis intervention, counseling and resources to other service agencies. A Rape Crisis Advocate will respond to a hospital to help support the patient and link the patient to important aftercare services.
